  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This classic Korean Tteokbokki recipe features chewy rice cakes simmered in a flavorful spicy sauce made with gochujang, soy sauce, and garlic, combined with fish cakes, tender cabbage, carrots, and green onions. Garnished with toasted sesame seeds and optionally hard-boiled eggs, it’s a comforting and popular street food that can be enjoyed as a satisfying snack or meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 300 g rice cakes (tteok)
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups anchovy or beef broth
  • 150 g fish cakes, sliced
  • 1 cup cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 2 stalks green onions, chopped

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Finishing Touches

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Hard-boiled eggs, sliced (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Boil Broth: In a large pot, bring 2 cups of water and 2 cups of anchovy or beef broth to a rolling boil to create a flavorful base.
  2. Cook Rice Cakes and Fish Cakes: Add 300 g of rice cakes and 150 g of sliced fish cakes to the boiling broth. Cook for about 5 minutes until the rice cakes soften and become chewy.
  3. Prepare Sauce: In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup gochujang, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 2 cloves minced garlic to create a rich and spicy sauce.
  4. Add Sauce and Vegetables: Stir the prepared sauce into the pot along with 1 cup sliced cabbage, 1 cup julienned carrots, and 2 chopped green onions. Continue to cook for another 5 to 7 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Finish and Remove from Heat: Stir in 1 tablespoon sesame oil for added flavor and richness. Remove the pot from heat to prevent overcooking.
  6. Serve and Garnish: Serve the Tteokbokki hot, garnished with toasted sesame seeds and optionally sliced hard-boiled eggs for extra texture and protein.

Notes

  • Rice cakes should be fresh or properly soaked if using refrigerated or frozen to ensure they soften correctly.
  • Anchovy broth adds authentic Korean flavor, but beef broth is an excellent alternative.
  • Adjust the amount of gochujang based on your preferred spice level.
  • Adding hard-boiled eggs is traditional and provides a nice balance to the spicy sauce.
  • This dish can be customized by adding other vegetables or noodles for variation.
