Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried onion
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

Creamy Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 9 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup vegetable broth (or beef broth)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prep Ingredients: Thinly slice the mushrooms, finely dice the onion, and mince the garlic cloves. Having all ingredients prepared will make the cooking process smoother.
  2. Make the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, dried onion, salt, black pepper, heavy cream, egg, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently with your hands until just combined to avoid overworking the meat. Divide the mixture evenly into 4 portions and shape each into a ball.
  3. Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large nonstick skillet over high heat. Place the beef balls into the hot skillet and press down with a spatula to form patties about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick. Cook each side for 3 to 5 minutes until nicely browned. Remove patties from skillet and set aside on a clean plate.
  4. Sauté Aromatics and Mushrooms: Reduce heat to medium. Using the same skillet, add diced onion and minced garlic, cooking for about 2 minutes until fragrant. Add the sliced mushrooms, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Cook until mushrooms release moisture and start to brown. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon butter for richness.
  5. Make the Gravy Base: Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine and cook out the raw flour taste. Add Worcestershire sauce and then slowly pour in the vegetable or beef broth while stirring. Allow to simmer for about 1 minute, scraping up any browned bits from the pan to enrich the gravy’s flavor.
  6. Finish the Gravy and Reheat Patties: Pour in the heavy cream and bring the gravy to a gentle boil. Let it simmer for 2 minutes to thicken slightly. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and simmer with the gravy for another 5 to 7 minutes, ensuring the patties are warmed through and the flavors meld.
  7. Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley and a sprinkle of black pepper. Serve the hamburger steaks hot with plenty of creamy mushroom gravy spooned over the top. Enjoy this comforting classic!

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meat to keep the hamburger steaks tender.
  • Using panko breadcrumbs helps create a light texture for the patties.
  • Vegetable broth can be substituted with beef broth for a richer flavor.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute panko breadcrumbs and flour with gluten-free alternatives.
  • If the gravy is too thick, thin it down with a splash more broth or cream.
