Tips & Variations

  • For extra moisture, soak breadcrumbs in a little milk before mixing with the meat.
  • Try adding chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for added flavor.
  • Use ground turkey or a beef-pork mix if you prefer a leaner or different taste.
  • For a smoky twist, add a teaspoon of smoked paprika to the meat mixture.

Storage

Store leftover meatloaf in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm slices gently in a microwave or oven until heated through. You can also freeze cooked meatloaf for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

How to Serve

A black plate holds a meal with three main parts: two thick slices of brown meatloaf with a shiny, dark brown glaze on top in the center, a scoop of white mashed potatoes sprinkled with green herbs on the lower left, and a pile of bright green cooked green beans on the upper left side of the plate, all placed on a white marbled surface. FAQs

Can I make meatloaf ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the meat mixture and shape the loaf a day in advance. Store it covered in the refrigerator and bake when ready, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time if cold.

What can I use instead of plain breadcrumbs?

If you don’t have plain breadcrumbs, crushed crackers, oats, or even panko can work as a substitute. They help bind the meatloaf while adding texture.

  3. Shape the Loaf: Shape the meat mixture into a loaf approximately 2 inches thick and place it on a foil-lined baking sheet for easy cleanup.
  4. Initial Bake: Bake the meatloaf in the preheated oven for 30 minutes to begin cooking through.
