Creamy Mashed Potatoes Recipe

  • Author: Lila
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Creamy Mashed Potatoes made with Yukon gold potatoes, garlic, melted butter, and warm heavy cream, resulting in a rich and smooth side dish perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes & Aromatics

  • 4 pounds Yukon gold potatoes (russet potatoes can also be used)
  • 3 cloves garlic

Dairy & Seasonings

  • ⅓ cup melted salted butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream (whole milk or half and half can be substituted for a lighter version)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (start with ½ teaspoon each)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Potatoes: Peel the 4 pounds of Yukon gold potatoes and cut them into quarters to ensure even cooking. Place the cut potatoes into a large pot filled with cold, salted water.
  2. Cook Potatoes and Garlic: Add the 3 cloves of garlic to the pot. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook the potatoes uncovered for about 15 minutes or until they are fork-tender, then drain them thoroughly to remove all water.
  3. Warm the Cream: While the potatoes drain, warm 1 cup of heavy cream in a small saucepan on the stovetop or in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave until hot. Heating the cream helps it incorporate smoothly into the potatoes.
  4. Mash Potatoes: Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add the ⅓ cup melted salted butter and begin mashing the potatoes. Gradually pour in the warm cream while mashing to reach your desired creamy consistency.
  5. Season and Serve: Taste the mashed potatoes and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve immediately while hot for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute russet potatoes if Yukon gold is unavailable, but Yukon gold tends to yield a creamier texture.
  • Adjust the amount of butter and cream to suit your taste and dietary preferences.
  • Warming the cream before adding helps to keep the potatoes hot and blend more easily.
  • This recipe serves 10, so adjust quantities as needed for smaller or larger groups.
  • Use a potato masher for a rustic texture or a ricer for an ultra-smooth finish.
