  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This Cranberry Jalapeño Dip is a vibrant and flavorful appetizer perfect for gatherings. Creamy softened cream cheese is sweetened with brown sugar and honey, then topped with a spicy-sweet mixture of cooked dried cranberries, fresh jalapeños, and aromatic cilantro. Zesty lime and warm spices like cumin and granulated garlic add complexity, making each bite a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy.

Ingredients

Scale

Cream Cheese Base

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Topping

  • 2 cups dried cranberries
  • 3 fresh jalapeño peppers, seeded and minced
  • ½ bunch fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 limes, zested and juiced
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon granulated garlic
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup water (for cooking cranberries)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cream Cheese Base: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, brown sugar, and honey. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and creamy without any grainy texture.
  2. Chill the Base: Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly on a shallow serving dish to about 1½ inches thick. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate while you prepare the topping.
  3. Cook the Cranberries: In a small pot, add the dried cranberries and ¼ cup water. Cook over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes until the cranberries soften and rehydrate.
  4. Add Remaining Topping Ingredients: To the pot with softened cranberries, add the minced jalapeños, chopped cilantro, green onions, lime zest, lime juice, sugar, granulated garlic, cumin, salt, and pepper. Continue cooking over medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sugar has dissolved and most of the liquid evaporates.
  5. Let Flavors Develop: Remove the pot from heat and let the mixture sit at room temperature for about 2 hours to allow flavors to meld. Before using, strain off any excess liquid from the topping.
  6. Assemble the Dip: Remove the chilled cream cheese base from the refrigerator. Spoon the cranberry-jalapeño mixture evenly over the top to create a layered dip.
  7. Serve: Serve immediately with crackers, pita chips, or toasted baguette slices for a delicious appetizer.

Notes

  • For less heat, reduce the number of jalapeños or remove all seeds.
  • This dip can be prepared a day in advance and refrigerated to enhance flavor melding.
  • For a tangier version, use freshly squeezed lemon juice instead of lime.
  • Ensure cream cheese is fully softened for easier mixing and a smoother texture.
  • The dip pairs beautifully with a variety of dippers including pretzels, vegetable sticks, or crostini.
