Description
This Coconut Caramel Flan recipe creates a luscious, creamy tropical dessert combining the rich caramel flavor with smooth coconut custard. Baked gently in a water bath, this classic flan offers a glossy caramel top and a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture perfect for any special occasion or a delightful treat.
Ingredients
Scale
Caramel
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
Custard
- 5 fresh eggs
- 1 cup cream of coconut
- 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the oven and water bath: Preheat your oven to 325°F. Fill a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with about an inch of water to create a water bath which ensures gentle and even baking for creamy custard.
- Make the caramel: In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then let it simmer without stirring until it turns a light golden brown, about 10 minutes, forming a rich caramel base.
- Mix the custard: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, coconut milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
- Assemble and bake: Pour the custard mixture gently over the set caramel in a flan pan. Place this flan pan inside the prepared water bath. Cover loosely with foil and bake for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
- Cool and serve: Remove the flan from the water bath and allow it to cool completely in the refrigerator. Once chilled, run a butter knife around the edges and carefully invert the flan onto a serving plate to reveal a glossy caramel top.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh eggs to achieve a creamy texture.
- Be patient when making the caramel; do not rush stirring to prevent crystallization.
- Ensure the water bath is deep enough to surround the flan pan for even baking.
- Chilling the flan thoroughly before serving helps it set properly and enhances flavor.
- If you prefer a less sweet flan, reduce sweetened condensed milk slightly.
