Ingredients
Scale
For the Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or American)
- 1/4 cup pickles, finely chopped (optional)
For the Puff Pastry
- 1 package (17.3 oz) frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, add a bit of oil and sauté the finely chopped onion and minced garlic until they soften. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
- Season the Meat: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Continue cooking for 2 to 3 minutes until the flavors meld together. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Mix in Cheese and Pickles: Stir in the shredded cheese and finely chopped pickles, if using, allowing the cheese to melt and blend with the beef mixture.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheets and cut them into approximately 3×3 inch squares.
- Fill and Seal Pastry: Place about a tablespoon of the beef filling in the center of each pastry square. Fold the pastry over to form a triangle or rectangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges decoratively.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of each pastry with the beaten egg to create a golden, shiny finish when baked.
- Bake: Place the prepared pastries on the lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving warm, ideally alongside your favorite dipping sauces such as ketchup, mustard, or barbecue sauce.
Notes
- Be sure to cool the beef filling before filling the pastry to prevent the pastry from becoming soggy.
- Choose sharp cheddar or American cheese for a classic cheeseburger taste.
- Pickles are optional but add a nice tangy contrast to the savory filling.
- Seal the edges well to prevent filling from leaking during baking.
- Serve these bites warm for the best flavor and texture.
- Leftovers can be reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
