Sloppy Joe Recipe

  • Author: Lila
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

A classic Sloppy Joe recipe featuring seasoned ground beef sautéed with onions and green peppers, simmered in a tangy ketchup and mustard sauce. Perfect for a quick and hearty meal served on buns.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped fine
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped fine

Condiments and Seasonings

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and green pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until they start to soften.
  2. Brown the Ground Beef: Push the onions and peppers to the outer edge of the pan and increase the heat to medium-high. Spread the ground beef evenly in the center of the pan and cook undisturbed for 5 minutes until the bottom begins to brown.
  3. Cook and Season Beef: Season the beef with salt and black pepper. Flip the meat over and break it into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Continue cooking until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Add Sauce and Simmer: Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Let the mixture cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto burger buns, brioche buns, or potato rolls. Serve hot for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • For a spicier twist, add a dash of hot sauce or chili powder to the sauce mixture.
  • Use leaner ground beef if you want to reduce fat content.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated; flavors improve after resting.
  • Serve with pickles or coleslaw for a classic accompaniment.
