Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped fine
- 1 medium green pepper, chopped fine
Condiments and Seasonings
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp canola oil
- salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and green pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until they start to soften.
- Brown the Ground Beef: Push the onions and peppers to the outer edge of the pan and increase the heat to medium-high. Spread the ground beef evenly in the center of the pan and cook undisturbed for 5 minutes until the bottom begins to brown.
- Cook and Season Beef: Season the beef with salt and black pepper. Flip the meat over and break it into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Continue cooking until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add Sauce and Simmer: Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Let the mixture cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto burger buns, brioche buns, or potato rolls. Serve hot for a comforting meal.
Notes
- For a spicier twist, add a dash of hot sauce or chili powder to the sauce mixture.
- Use leaner ground beef if you want to reduce fat content.
- Can be made ahead and reheated; flavors improve after resting.
- Serve with pickles or coleslaw for a classic accompaniment.
