Doughnut Dough:

  • 6 Tbsp lukewarm water
  • 5 oz buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 1 egg, at room temperature
  • 2 oz butter, melted
  • 16 oz all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 2 oz sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp quick-rise yeast (or regular dried yeast)

For Frying and Coating:

  • 16 oz olive oil
  • 4 oz sugar (1/2 cup or more for coating)

Optional Fillings:

  • jam, chocolate hazelnut spread, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. FOR BREAD MACHINE: Place water, buttermilk, beaten egg, and melted butter in the bread machine pan. Add dry ingredients except yeast. Make an indentation and add yeast. Set on ‘dough’ setting.
  2. FOR STAND MIXER OR BY HAND: Mix dry ingredients. Sprinkle yeast over warm water and let it activate. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Knead until a dough forms. Let rise until doubled.
  3. Divide dough, roll out, cut into doughnuts, let rise again, then fry in oil until golden. Coat in sugar. Fill with desired fillings if desired.
