Ingredients
Scale
Steak
- 1½ pounds top sirloin steak, cubed into 1-inch pieces
- 1 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
Sauce
- 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
- ¼ cup water or beef broth
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon sesame seed oil or extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or white vinegar
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano or your favorite dried herbs
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Garnish
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced green onions
Instructions
- Prep the Steak: Pat the sirloin steak cubes dry using paper towels. Season evenly with sweet or smoked paprika, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside to let the flavors meld.
- Make the Sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, water or beef broth, minced garlic, honey, sesame seed oil, rice vinegar, dried oregano, and cornstarch until fully combined and smooth. Set the sauce aside.
- Cook the Steak Bites: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a cast iron or heavy skillet over medium-high heat until it’s sizzling hot. Add half of the steak cubes in a single layer, cooking for about 2 minutes on each side until nicely browned and cooked through. Remove cooked steak bites from the skillet and repeat with the remaining steak, adding more oil if needed. Set all cooked steak bites aside.
- Cook the Sauce: Give the prepared honey garlic sauce a good stir. Pour about one-third of it into the hot skillet, scraping the bottom to lift any browned bits which add flavor.
- Combine Steak and Sauce: Return all the cooked steak bites to the skillet and pour the remaining sauce over them. Cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the steak beautifully.
- Finish and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Transfer the steak bites to a serving plate and drizzle any remaining pan sauce over the top. Garnish generously with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately while hot and flavorful.
Notes
- For best results, use a cast iron skillet to get a great sear on the steak.
- Adjust the honey quantity for sweeter or less sweet sauce according to taste preference.
- Substitute low sodium soy sauce with tamari for a gluten-free option.
- Try adding a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the sauce for a spicy kick.
- The steak bites can be served over rice or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
- Ensure the steak cubes are uniform in size for even cooking.
- You can marinate the steak briefly for extra flavor, but this is optional.
