  • Author: Lila
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This homemade Hoisin Sauce recipe is a flavorful, easy-to-make condiment combining savory soy sauce, sweet maple syrup, and aromatic sesame oil with a hint of spicy chili. Perfect as a dip or addition to stir-fries, it brings a rich, tangy, and slightly sweet umami taste to your dishes in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (light sodium)
  • 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter (unsweetened)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon miso paste

Thickening Mixture

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Combine Sauce Ingredients: Add all the sauce ingredients—soy sauce, natural peanut butter, maple syrup, chili sauce, molasses, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, black pepper, and miso paste—into a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk everything together to combine thoroughly.
  2. Heat and Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium to keep it simmering gently, allowing the flavors to meld.
  3. Prepare Thickening Mixture: In a separate small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch completely in the water to create a slurry. This will help prevent lumps when added to the sauce.
  4. Thicken the Sauce: Whisk the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce. Continue cooking while stirring frequently until the sauce begins to thicken and coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Adjust Consistency: If the sauce becomes too thick, gradually add boiling water one tablespoon at a time to reach your desired consistency.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sauce to cool. It will thicken further as it cools. Serve as a flavorful dipping sauce or incorporate it into stir-fry dishes for added depth and richness.

Notes

  • Use light sodium soy sauce to control saltiness.
  • Natural unsweetened peanut butter gives authentic flavor without added sugars.
  • Adjust chili sauce quantity to control the heat level.
  • For a vegan version, substitute honey with maple syrup.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Reheat gently before serving, adding water if necessary to loosen the sauce.
