Ingredients

  • 16 ounces French Bread Loaf or Garlic Bread
  • 3 tablespoons Butter (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons Grated Parmesan
  • 1 tablespoon Minced Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 1/2–2 cups Reduced-Sodium Chicken Broth or Chicken Stock
  • 2 cups Sliced Mushrooms
  • 2 cups Chopped Celery
  • 2 cups Chopped Yellow Onion
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 12 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/3 cup Dried Parsley
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Dried Basil
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cups Diced Chicken Breast (optional)
  • 12–14 oz Sliced Sausage (optional)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375℉.
  2. Step 2: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, minced garlic, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, and black pepper. Cut or tear the bread into 1/2 inch cubes and toss with the garlic butter mixture. Spread evenly on a large baking pan.
  3. Step 3: Bake the bread cubes for about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and transfer to a large bowl.
  4. Step 4: While the bread bakes, melt 12 tablespoons of butter in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion, celery, and mushrooms, and cook until tender, about 6–7 minutes.
  5. Step 5: Lower the oven temperature to 350℉. Lightly grease a 13″x9″ or 3.5–4 quart baking dish.
  6. Step 6: Add the cooked vegetables and all seasonings—including dried parsley, basil, garlic powder, oregano, and salt—to the bread cubes. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with 1 cup of chicken broth, then stir into the bread mixture. Add additional chicken broth slowly as needed, up to 2 cups total, until the bread absorbs the liquid without pooling.
  7. Step 7: Pour the stuffing into the prepared baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350℉ for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until the top is crispy and golden brown.
  8. Step 8 (Optional): For stuffing with chicken, cook diced chicken breast in a pan over medium heat for 5–6 minutes until no longer pink and season with salt and pepper. Stir the cooked chicken into the stuffing before baking.
  9. Step 9 (Optional): For stuffing with sausage, cook sliced sausage in a pan over medium heat for 7–8 minutes until browned. Mix into the stuffing before baking for added flavor.

Tips & Variations

  • Use day-old bread for better texture, as it absorbs the broth without becoming mushy.
  • Try adding fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for a bright, aromatic boost.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute vegetable broth and skip the chicken or sausage.
  • If you prefer a crunchier topping, sprinkle extra Parmesan cheese on top before the last bake.

Storage

Store leftover stuffing covered in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in an oven-safe dish, cover with foil, and warm at 350℉ until heated through, about 20 minutes. You can also microwave individual portions, though the texture may soften slightly.

How to Serve

A dark gray plate holds a full meal with four main layers: a large, golden-brown roasted turkey leg placed near the center, creamy mashed potatoes on the right side with a pool of light brown gravy in the middle, a heap of golden toasted stuffing with browned mushrooms and herbs at the bottom left, and a portion of green beans mixed with crispy fried onions and creamy sauce at the top left. In the background on a white marbled surface, there is a white gravy boat with more brown gravy, and a red cloth with a checkered pattern is partially visible. FAQs

Can I prepare this stuffing ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the stuffing up to a day in advance. Keep it covered in the refrigerator, then bake as directed when ready to serve.

What bread works best for stuffing?

French bread or garlic bread works wonderfully as they have a sturdy texture that holds up well when mixed with broth and baked. Avoid soft sandwich bread which can get too mushy.

Liquids and Binding Agents

  • 1 1/22 cups Reduced-Sodium Chicken Broth or Chicken Stock
  • 2 Large Eggs

Optional Proteins

  • 2 cups Diced Chicken Breast
  • 1214 oz Sliced Sausage

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375℉ to prepare for baking the bread cubes.
  2. Prepare Garlic Butter Bread Mix: In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, grated Parmesan, Italian seasoning, and black pepper. Cut or tear the bread into 1/2-inch cubes, then toss them thoroughly in the garlic butter mixture to coat evenly. Spread the coated bread cubes in a large baking pan.
  3. Bake Bread Cubes: Bake the bread cubes at 375℉ for about 15 minutes until they are slightly toasted. Remove from oven and transfer to a large mixing bowl.
  4. Sauté Vegetables: While bread cooks, melt 12 tablespoons butter in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onions, celery, and sliced mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables become tender and fragrant, about 6-7 minutes.
  5. Reduce Oven Temperature and Prepare Dish: After the bread cubes are done, lower the oven temperature to 350℉. Lightly grease a 13″x9″ or 3.5-4 quart baking dish to prevent sticking.
  6. Combine Ingredients: In the large bowl with the baked bread cubes, add the sautéed vegetables and all dried seasonings including parsley, basil, garlic powder, oregano, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and 1 cup of chicken broth. Pour this mixture into the bread and vegetable mix, gently folding to combine. Slowly add more chicken broth as needed up to 2 cups total, until the bread is moist but not swimming in liquid.
  7. Assemble Stuffing: Transfer the stuffing mixture into the prepared baking dish. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil to retain moisture during baking.
  8. Bake Stuffing: Bake covered at 350℉ for 40 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is crispy and golden brown.
  9. Optional – Cook Chicken: For a chicken variation, cook diced chicken breast in a skillet over medium heat for 5-6 minutes until fully cooked and no longer pink, seasoning with salt and pepper. Stir cooked chicken into stuffing before baking as described in step 7.
  10. Optional – Cook Sausage: For a sausage variation, cook sliced sausage in a skillet over medium heat for 7-8 minutes until browned. Mix cooked sausage into the stuffing before baking as in step 7.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread if possible for better texture and absorption.
  • Adjust the amount of chicken broth to ensure the stuffing is moist but not soggy.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the chicken and sausage and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • Leftover stuffing can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
  • Feel free to add fresh herbs like sage or thyme for extra flavor.
