Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1 pound lean ground beef (or ground turkey/chicken)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon plant-based Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1/3 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy
- 1 medium onion (sliced)
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1¾ cups beef broth
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly until all ingredients are well blended. Shape the mixture into four oval patties.
- Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and sear for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cremini mushrooms. Cook for 7-9 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and mushrooms are tender.
- Make the Gravy Base: Reduce the heat to low, then add butter to the skillet and let it melt completely. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns a light golden color.
- Add Beef Broth: Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the seared patties to the skillet with the sautéed onions and mushrooms. Let everything simmer together for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and patties to absorb the gravy.
Notes
- For a leaner option, substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken.
- Seasoned breadcrumbs can be replaced with plain breadcrumbs and added herbs or spices as preferred.
- Use plant-based Worcestershire sauce for a vegetarian-friendly alternative.
- Adjust salt and pepper according to taste, especially if using broth that contains sodium.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
